Alembic

(Above) My illustration of an Alembic, an Alchemical vessel typically made of glass for distilling liquids inside. For a little background on the content, the alchemical understanding was that vapours or steam were spirits coming out of liquid when heated. This was a kind of mythic science where objects were not thought to be dead things.

(Above) My good friend, Trotec Speedy 500 layering my drawings into 1/4" plywood.

Super tiny Alembic!!!

Well Crafted Lies…

Here are some new images made from compositing photos I took on my iPhone in Blender with models I've been working with. This is a fun exercise in getting lighting, camera, depth and environments to match up.

This first one above is a bear head I bought from a souvenir shop and 3D scanned and enlarged in this image.

Here's a sunset view in Montreal with a text/billboard that I composited into the scene.

Melting Gold Lion Head

This piece I'm starting is connected to some ideas I'm working with from Alchemy but for now here's the sculpture in progress...

First step, some 3D renders to test out how it could look

Next I sliced the 3D model into flat vector images that were cut out of 4 sheets of cardboard, I popped out the sections and glued them together.

Next I began coating the cardboard in wood filler/ putty and sanding.

Here's the lion head after 2 coats of wood filler and a spray coat of primer. It will take a fair bit more layering/sanding but the organic look is starting to come through. I got a suggestion to leave some of the piece in its raw layered state and I think I will do that

Green/Gold Lion at the green stage

Here's the Alchemical source image for the lion head from The Alchemical and Rosicrucian Compendium ca. 1760.

Laser Cut Stacking

Here's the first project I've done using a laser cutter to make a sculpture from slices.
It started with a sculpture I made in 3D software, then sliced into vector files for output to the laser. There are dowel holes punched into each one of these slices so that they align in assembly

…and the fully assembled sculpture below.

Whale Bear

In progress: Pictured above is a model I'm testing with a 3 1/2 axis CNC machine. Its pictured below with the styrofoam blank which has a max scale of 4" x 4" x 15". The demos I have seen for this process don't promise a lot of fine detail. The model has some variation- lots of detail in the head and a little less in the whale body. Very curious to see what the results are from this test run...

Blown Glass Original Bee Kingdom Collab/ Modelled in 3D / Very 1st 3D Print ever!!!
The glasswork on the far left was done as a three-part collaboration at Bee Kingdom, with Phillip Bandura making the top, Ryan Fairweather making the middle and myself making the bottom. We stick them all together while the glass is hot. The finished piece is about 20" high. The 3D printed one is about 8cm high. To see more from Bee Kingdom: www.beekingdom.ca
